Did you know that since the 1800s, the UK has lost 80% of its lowland heathland making it rarer than a rainforest? Staff and volunteers were out on our Highgate Common Nature Reserve near Wombourne this week clearing an area of invasive scrub to encourage the growth of heathland plants like heather and bilberry. Highgate Common is home to a range of rare heathland species including oil beetles, mining bees and cuckoo bees, as well as birds such as tree pipit, stonechat and green woodpecker.
