Did you know that starting the morning off with God is the key to strength and success in your day? MORNING OFFERING JANUARY 20, 2015 One should not say that it is impossible to reach a virtuous life; but one should say that it is not easy. Nor do those who have reached it find it easy to maintain. – St. Anthony of the Desert MEDITATION OF THE DAY Inasmuch as we have one Father in heaven, God, we are all brothers of Christ, and it matters not from which city or country we are gathered here or whether our parentage be noble or lowly. The one God created all of us, governs us, and cares for us; He has called us by His external word, and daily by interior contrition He calls us to the one beatitude, our final end. This one God has promised to give Himself to us as our future reward in the presence of the angels and amid the universal happiness of the citizens of heaven. Therefore, since we are called by this one God, redeemed by one price, and imbued by the one Spirit, let us endeavor to love and serve one another. If we wish to be pleasing to Christ, then let us bear one another’s burdens and in charity pray for one another, for God is in each of us, and each of us is in God. — Thomas à Kempis, p. 64-5 SAINT OF DAY St. Sebastian Saint Sebastian (died c. 288) was born in Gaul to wealthy Italian parents. According to legend he went to Rome to serve the Christians persecuted under Diocletian, and to do so without suspicion he enrolled in the Roman army as an officer. He did much to encourage the faith of the Christians in the face of their martyrdom, and in the process made many new converts through his gift of healing. Once he was found out to be a Christian, he was tied to a tree and shot through with arrows. He survived this attack, and was healed by St. Irene of Rome. Being fully recovered, he returned to preach to Diocletian. Diocletian then had him beaten to death with clubs. St. Sebastian is the patron of many causes, most notably of archers, athletes, police officers, soldiers, and against plague victims and enemies of religion. Saint Sebastian’s feast day is January 20th. VERSE FOR THE DAY Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5 MORNING OFFERING PRAYERS O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen. PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL, THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. PSALM 19:14 PRAYER Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Amen. YOU MAKE IT A GOOD DAY ST. VITUS FAMILY!
