Did you know that up to 40% of dogs in the U.S weigh too much? Like people, being overweight puts dogs at risk for health problems. You and your dog can stay healthy and fit together by walking. And, many dog owners find it easier to stick with a walking routine when they know “Fido” is counting on them! Here are some things to keep in mind: Getting Started – If you or your dog have a health condition or have not been active in a long time, check with your doctor and your dog’s vet before starting any exercise program. Establishing a Routine - Work slowly toward a realistic goal and gradually increase your speed and length of walks. Consider your dog’s needs – for example, working breeds and juvenile dogs typically need a lot of exercise while deep-chested breeds, such as Great Danes or Doberman Pinschers, should not exercise right after meals. Avoiding Overload – Watch for signs that you (or your dog) may be doing too much. You should be breathing heavier but still able to talk comfortably while walking. If your dog is breathing fast, panting excessively, staggering or refusing to follow you, slow down and head home. If either of you are stiff, sore or worn-out for hours after a walk, take it easier next time. Preventing Dehydration – Make sure that you are both well-hydrated, especially on hot days. Bring along a water bottle and foldable drinking bowl or walk in places with public water sources. Short-faced breeds such as Boxers and Bulldogs, are especially vulnerable to heat exhaustion because they don’t pant efficiently. Protecting Paws – Just like you need a good walking shoe to help prevent injuries, your dog needs to take steps to prevent paw damage. Work up gradually to long walks on rough surfaces so your dog can develop thicker pads. On hot days avoid prolonged contact with asphalt or sand. Check paws for ice build- up on snowy days. Consider buying dog booties. Together, you and your dog will enjoy a stronger heart, lower blood pressure, more energy, increased bone density and the many other benefits of a consistent walking program! Happy Walking!
