Did you see the supermoon this week? I set up my tripod to capture a few pictures. As dazzling as the moon appeared, it is just a speck compared to the rest of the universe. Since 1990, the year the Hubble telescope was carried into orbit by the space shuttle, humans have been able to peer deeper into the vast expanse of the universe and see what no people before us have ever seen. Astronomers are now certain that the visible universe contains around 100 billion galaxies and each one of those galaxies contains around 100 billion stars. That means that there are more stars in the visible universe than there are grains of sand on the earth. Astonishing, isn’t it? How small is our earth? It would take 1.3 million earths to fill up the sun. But that is just the beginning! The largest star, VY Canis Majoris is a billion times larger than our sun! To give you an idea of how big that is, it would take an airplane flying at 560 miles per hour 1100 years to circle the massive star one time. In the book of Romans 1:18-20 Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit writes, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” God tells us that every person on earth has sufficient witness in creation to know he not only exists, but also has eternal power and is divine. Think about that!
