@ Didi Cheeka, still on criticism, I would like to read your review of 12 Years a Slave (have you done one? yes, I should start paying you to write these reviews, shouldnt I?) I watched it, with the unnecessary baggage of all the hype that came with it, Qudus Àdérémi Onikeku said it made him cry or something like that, I knew something was wrong when in less than ten minutes I was already kind of bored. It was a well made movie, but for me it did not particularly bring anything new to the art of film making or to the discourse around the trans-atlantic slave trade. In my opinion, it was just an okay film. I had the same view about Gravity when I watched that one as well, great thing to make a film with just 2 characters, but the film sort of finished after the first strike from the floating debris. It would have been more powerful as a short film (8-15 minutes tops). Then I watched Nebraska, no slave trade here, no white man acting horny over a black slave girl acted by a Kenyan actress who then assumes celebrity status for what Im not certain can be pinned down to strictly her acting prowess in the film (Im still wondering what was so awe inspiring about Lupitas outing in 12 years, seriously, her character shouldnt have had all that screen time, it was so immaterial to the main thread of the story, I would have spent more time on the character of the other black woman in that film, the one who was separated from her children, as far as Im concerned the actress who took that role gave it a bit more bite), there were no disintegrating space stations either, but there was a STORY! Told with a lot of gentility, quiet humour and care, it made me have even more respect for elder citizens, who hold their stories and their fire in their souls as they watch the world move on, it made me feel like leaving where I was to go give my old man a hug. 12 years a slave didnt do that for me, so shoot me, perhaps Im twisted like that. Thanks to Leo Spartani for bringing Nebraska to my attention.
