Diesel Locomotive Works – Varanasi makes 5500 HP Locomotive New Delhi: Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi has made worlds first 5500 HP Locomotive – WDG5 for the Indian Railways. At present only 4000 HP locomotives have been made on 22 tonne axle load. The 5500 HP WDG5 is designed to improve the throughput with higher balancing speeds. The locomotive will be able to achieve 100 Kmph speed on level track with higher axle load. WDG-5 is meant for goods train and is already running on Central Railway tracks. WDG5 features advanced technologies like Electronic Fuel Injection – for higher fuel efficiency and emission control. DLW’s locomotive designs implement collision protection, provision for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, task lighting, improved visibility, ergonomic seating and a soothing and aesthetic visual TFT based display. WDG5 is the only locomotive on Indian railways to have on-board toilet facility for the drivers. DLW can now manufacture locomotives from 1400 HP to 5500 HP for multiple track gauges. DLW is the only manufacture of mainline diesel electric locomotives in India and whole South and Southeast Asia. It is the largest manufacturer of loco engines in the world with 6700 locomotives units produced till date. In the year 2012-13, DLW manufactured 294 locomotive’s.
