Diet: Salt May Be to Blame for Some Headaches. A study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that diets high in salt may be a potential cause of headaches. Results showed that participants who ate foods high in sodium (8 g per day) had about 30% more headaches than those who ate foods low in sodium (4 g per day). Additionally, researchers observed that this difference remained whether the participants ate the standard Western diet or the healthier DASH diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and reduced saturated and total fat. The findings suggest that some headaches could be reduced by lowering salt consumption, but additional studies are needed to determine mechanisms that mediate the association between sodium intake and headache.
