Disability Rights wrote: Nigeria’s First Lady advocates support for persons with disabilitiesAfrica Aug 16, 2013 NIGERIA: The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Wednesday said that persons with disabilities should be motivated to realize their potentials. Jonathan made the call during a dinner in honour of three first ladies who are in Abuja to attend the National Women for Peace Rally. They are Mrs Kim Simplis of Belize, Prof. Khadijat Hamdi of Saharawi Peoples Republic and Mrs Nompumelelo Zuma of South Africa. Jonathan said that if persons with disabilities were encouraged, they would reach their full potentials and contribute their quota to nation building. “There is ability in disability. The Almighty God that created persons with disabilities also provided them with the talent and skill to live a fulfilled life. “We must, therefore, continue to motivate them to overcome their disabilities and launch themselves into greatness”, she said. She mentioned some famous people who conquered their disabilities to achieve greatness. Simplis of Belize said she was humbled by the reception accorded her by her Nigerian counterpart and the dinner in her honour. “This is my first visit to Africa and I know Nigeria would be my gateway in my future visits to Africa. “I will see to it that Belize starts a Women’s Day to celebrate the achievement of women in the country”, she said. Hamdi of Saharawi expressed appreciation for the support given to her country by Nigeria. “I consider myself a part of the Nigerian and South African family because the two countries are dear to the hearts of the Saharawi women.” The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Amina Sambo, female ministers, legislators and wives of top government functionaries were at the dinner.
