Discernment or Divination? Print | Bookmark (CTRL-D) The preacher looks intensely into the television camera. He then closes his eyes shut with a face expression like a woman in pain about to give birth. He then points his finger towards the television screen and says something like...God is showing me right now that He wants to heal 17 people who are watching this program. If you are one of those 17 people, no wait, God just told me that He wants to increased the number by 3 so that makes it 20 people that God wants to heal. Praise God! Not once have I ever heard a preacher in church, in person, via television, radio, literature or what have you say to people...God is showing me that you are holy people, righteous, just, forgiven of all sin, eternally loved, without spot, blemish or wrinkle. Redeemed, sanctified, complete in Christ, delivered, healed and free from the law of sin and death. God is showing me that as far as the East is from the West the sins of the world He remembers no more. Recently a well known minister sent out a large volume of mailings inviting people to attend a revival meeting that will change peoples lives forever. Inside the mailing it read...12 things you need to do in order to experience Gods blessings, receive Gods healing and overcome fear. Then on the back of the mailing it read...Dont miss this great revival because if you come, you wont leave here like you came. God knows how many years I attended such meetings on a regular basis. :( A dear well meaning friend at work gave me a copy of the mailing and as I read it, he asked...So what do you think Eddie? I then said...How about 12 things that you dont need to do in order to experience Gods blessings, Gods healing and overcome fear. The guy looked at me with a smile and said...And what would be the first on your list Eddie? I said...Dont attend the meeting, save your money, and thank God that Jesus left nothing undone and pray that you dont get suckered in again by another mailing from another preacher that probably will have 15 things instead of 12. :) Looking back at the years that I ministered along the lines I just described above in this article and the many times I was ministered to by men and women who believed that God had given them a number of things that God would do IF we would do, I cant help but to compare the entire thing to The Power of Suggestion or the practice of Divination. It just amazes me how God is always showing ministers and preachers what God has told them that people need to do in order to receive, but God never shows it or tells the people themselves. Go figure! According to many this is what Jesus called The greater works as mentioned in John 14:12. But are they really the greater works? Now, we need to remember that Jesus said this before going to the cross. Friends, the greater works were done and completed at the cross. To believe that God is still showing man what people must do in order to be blessed, healed and what have you, is to add and take away from the work of the cross and to frustrate the grace of God as Paul says in Galatians 2:21. These television so called Discerners (divinators) who to me are operating in what I believe is the Power of Suggestion are doing nothing short of putting people under guilt, fear, self-righteous works of condemnation. This all takes me to the words of Paul when he asked the people at Corinth...How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a tongue, hath a doctrine, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. 1 Cor. 14:26. Friends, we need to ask ourselves the following question...Did God do it all through the grace of Christ once and for all, or is God still revealing through the works of men additional things we must do? :( People - Christians that is -- ask me...So what do you suppose we ought to do when we see and hear these preachers over the television and radio make their predictions about what God has shown them that we must do? I simply say...Use your discerning television remote control button and turned them off. Friends, these guys are out to make a fast buck and what they will lead you into is a life of fear, anxiety, worry and confusion. For the simple reason that when you dont see the things that God showed them come to pass in your life, you are left with feelings of doubt as to whether or not you are in Gods will or have done the right thing. These types of doctrines of so called revival meetings of discernment are nothing more than Divination. We have a lot of Bob Larsons, Richard Roberts and what have you that have actually led themselves to believe that they have a special gift or calling from God to discern what God has shown them that people need and what they need to do in order to be right with God and receive from God. If by now we dont realize and believe that the greater works were completed at the cross, then the apostle Paul lied when he said...For of Him, and through Him, are ALL things; to whom be glory forever. Rom. 11:36. Friends, just think how much time, money, frustration, worry, fear and what have you one can avoid if we ever come to the truth of this simple Gospel of the grace and peace of God and stop listening to men who are puffed up in their imaginations as Paul mentions in 2 Cor. 10:3-6 and Colossians 2:4 though 23. Please read! The greater works were done by the grace of God and there is nothing that can be added or deleted by an act of self-righteous works on mans part. The prophet Jeremiah couldnt have said it better when God told him...I have not sent these prophets, I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. Chapter 23. The so called gift of discernment that many of these television evangelist, preachers and what have you think they operate under today is nothing more than suspicion. They just want to control your life. Mind your business. Take your money, and keep you under a performance based oriented doctrines to lead you to believe that there is more to be done if you expect to receive more from God. Witchcraft! When God healed, He healed them all. He did not call out 20 and He did not point out peoples faults and then gave them an additional list of rules, laws and regulations to perform in order to be right with Him.
