*Disclaimer, this is an opinion piece about a Beatles album. Views may differ with what you feel but this information has been pieced together using not only the assembled tracks for each prospective album but also the recording notes held by EMI for each session, even for recordings done on the filmset were recorded my EMI equipment and professionals. And for your enjoyment, Glyn Johns 2nd mix. If you take the time, it is good not only to listen to all of Glyns offerings but to also listen to Spectors final album and years later, Paul McCartneys produced version made with the approval of Rindo and The Estates of John Lennon & George Harrison. No easy feat by any means as both Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison are properly protective of their deceased spouses image and long term memory across not only fans but all of time itself as this music will outlive us al in its popularity.. Glyn in recent times has shown himself to be rather impartial and adhorant to the work made by the Beatles and produced under Wall of Sound and shooting waitresses expert Phil Spector. Glyn has called the album as per its first official release as the worst Beatles album ever due to sound quality and overproduction and the band not being at its best. Decades earlier when speaking with critics, John Lennon himself went on record saying that Phil Spector had been handed a total pile of rubbish and that he had done his best in working with it with his famous wall of sound effect as the quality options were few and far between with ramblings, half attempts at songs and lots of halfhearted attempts at making music. Listening to the many hours of recordings made by The Beatles in their attempt to produce a rock movie that would show The Greatest band in the world making a hit album one can see hours upon hours of the prior mentioned farces as far as music is concerned, it confirmed that things were far from alright in the band and that interest in working together, thee magic that had been The Beatles had totally evaporated at this point. Fight after fight proved it. Even professional attempts at introducing work for approval for this prospective album and eventual live show by individual Beatles were simply outright mocked and sabotage. One can think of Johns famous break in during Teddy Boy where John breaks into a square dance lyric. Sadly there were so many cases of them doing his to each other I am surprised that they went along with Pauls last Beatles Project Record for so long. Information from inside sources including EMI recording session logs claim that at this point there were several severe tit for tats between John & Paul regarding business differences led to John wiping the bass track for The Long and Winding Road and improvising a sloppy track in its stead. It also later met when Paul let in a group of young girl fans to sing back up for Across the universe. Eventually other tracked ended up being finally recorded in a professional studio like Old Brown Shoe & I, Me, Mine sans Lennon altogether. Eventually it was abandoned altogether (Prior to Spectors involvement) and The Beatles wanted to do something fresh and like the good old days. It is because of the fights and tensions between, during and after the recordings for what was first called The Get Back project that longtime Producer George Martin laid down the law as Producer that if they returned to a professional album in a professional studio like Abbey Road, that all arguments would have to cease during the production of the album Abbey Road. It (Get Back/Let it Be) has been shelved and was experimented with off and on by Engineer Glyn Johns with the hope that his efforts would be accepted as a legitimate release. The dreams were squashed with Lennon, Harrison and Staff fully backing and thus not counting Pauls vote due ti the Majority vote for letting Producer Phil Spector handle it. This was done despite Paul not liking Spectors sound and having brought up many names of well qualified producers and lastly himself that could do a better job. Tensions were high at the time and John, George and Ringo had tired of pet projects which had been led by McCartney in an attempt to keep the band creative and working together rather than drifting apart during the void that Brian Epsteins death. (As I side note, I think that had he lived Brian would have loved running Apple and had the ability to keep the company grounded. Its a shame that he had passed.) Thus it was settled and thus it enlarged the infamous disputes between Paul and his band mates regarding this album and Beatles affairs as a whole. Even within the last decade and a half we saw Paul fight and win a battle to produce the album as it was meant to be without all of the glorified overdubs Spector did. He named it Let it Be...Naked without all the effects and multi layering and was able to pull off the album he said he could back in 1970. So despite the hubbub and the fighting, we have before us four choices of albums to hear. Personally after hearing the entire recording sessions for the project, I can personally agree as a producer myself that John Lennon was right that it took a miracle to produce anything out of it. Yest despite it all Glyn Johns did it twice, Phil Spector had a go at it acting as both engineer and producer and much later Paul McCartney performing what what he called his master vision to what The Beatles could have fully realized with the project. Please do let us know which one could you narrow your opinion down to as the best version that truly represents The Beatles and their idea to a project. We would like to know.
