Discussing evolution with someone over the weekend I found myself - TopicsExpress

Discussing evolution with someone over the weekend I found myself in the unpleasant position of having to defend creationists and by extension their entire view of cosmology. The best defense I could come up with is was freedom of religion. To point out that they were as entitled as anyone else the hold these delusional and obviously wrong beliefs. But that defense came up short when it came to elected officials. How can we elect someone whose views are irrational in such an obvious and fundamental way? Wont that irrationality be reflected in other ways which are important in making policy? Not just in setting school curricula but in an inability to accept or understand the basic laws of the universe? Or even the fundamental principles of human liberty which I see as universal natural law? Doesnt this explain a Santorum of a Huckabee or a Dan Patrick, whose unhinged view of the universe is reflected, among other things, in their inability to understand or accept mans basic right to be free? Shouldnt that inherently disqualify them from holding office and by extension make every choice of the voters who support them suspect?
