Disease theories of addiction frequently posit craving as a symptom of some underlying physiological imbalance or addictive need that gets stronger over time as the disease moves through its progressive intensification (Marlatt, 1987). To view craving in these terms is to see it as a force beyond ones personal volition.... An alternative approach is to define craving as a conditioned response to some exogenous cue or stimulus, particularly those associated with prior drug use (Marlatt, 1978; Marlatt, 1987).
