Dissociative identity disorder facts 1. Historically DID was named multiple personality disorder (MPD) but this is misleading - is not a personality disorder, each identity is only a part of a single personality. 2. For diagnosis, two or more distinct, highly dissociated parts must exist, which must be able to take control of the persons body, amnesia must exist between some parts, either for the present or the past. 3. It is the most severe dissociative disorder; and is very similar to other specified dissociative disorder (DDNOS), with similar causes and shared treatment guidelines. 4. Cause of DID: early and severe childhood abuse, usually from a trusted caregiver, leaving the child no-one to turn to. Most people with DID have PTSD. 5. Each dissociated identity is known as an Alter or Part.
