*** Do Not Make Resolutions *** I have written about this before but, at this time of year, it bears repetition. Many people make New Years Resolutions. A vast majority of them do not keep them. Many of you know that I value the power of words and their meaning as well as perceived meaning. To further explain, lets use the word kill. Everyone knows that this means to end the life of something, mostly pertaining to organic matter. However, that word has been used in recent times as an expression of anger towards someone as in Im gonna kill em. The perceived meaning of anger is the one understood and not the literal definition. This can be seen with the words Love, Hate, Cool and many other words. In the past, due to the lack of emphasis on the meaning of Resolution (a firm decision to do or not to do something) I instructed people to substitute the word Promise (a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen). From my point of view, when I make a Promise, it is one of the strongest things I can do because, in my opinion, it directly reflects upon me and who I am at my core. The pitfall in this is that not everyone holds the same meaning on Promise as I do (see comments on kill, love, hate, cool, etc). Although I place a great deal of meaning on the definitions of words, not everyone does. I would posit to say that a majority do not. The truth is that no matter what word you use, if you do not have the intestinal fortitude to make the changes, any words (resolutions, promises, objectives) are simply hollow and meaningless. I have spoken to many people who state that they want to make drastic change in the New Year. This is an admirable objective. Please read this carefully, do not expect that change overnight! This is why people get discouraged and quit. Weight is a common one. People want to lose it. It took you years to put that weight on, what makes you think you will lose it all in one month? Instead of saying in the New Year I want to lose 15 pounds perhaps a better statement would be I want to lose 1.25 pounds per month. It is the same outcome, but the 1.25 pounds is more manageable to achieve. Think about it. If you only lose 1.1 pounds in a month, most people will not give up. If they set their goal as 15 pounds in the new year and do not achieve it by February...well...look around and you will see many who have become discouraged and quit. As the New Year approaches us, Do Not Make Resolutions in the typical fashion of an audacious goal without measurement. If you truly want to change something, decide what it is you want to change, set your plan to do so over a reasonable time period and (this one is very important) have a support system that will help you accomplish your objective. In 2015, do not live life by chance...live it by design and Take Control. Happy and Prosperous 2015 To All!
