Do You Love Me? When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:15-17 Have you ever been asked by your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, parent, or child, “Do you love me?” What is their answer? Mine would be, “Of course I love you.” Imagine if they ask you two more times. My thought would be, What in the world? Why are they asking this? Of course I love them. Now they comment saying, “It is not enough. I want you to show me with your actions.” Peter had denied Jesus three times before Jesus was put to death. After Jesus was resurrected, he came back to the apostles, and on this occasion, Peter was to be brought back into the fold. To show his love for Jesus, Peter was to feed his lambs, take care of his sheep, and feed his sheep. Peter was to come away from his fear and take the lead to share the good news with God’s people at that time. Peter loved Jesus and was forgiven his sin. He was to repent and show his love by following Jesus’ commands. I am a sinner and have been forgiven through the blood of Jesus. I wonder if Jesus came to me and said, “Ken, do you love me?” What would he command when I said, “Of course I love you?” What if he asked three times or as many times as I have denied him? It may take a while. I do know what he has said. “Love God, love one another, and serve the world.” He has told me to share the good news and to make disciples. I am to glorify him in all I do and say. What would he ask of you? What would he ask of me? Are we doing it on a daily basis? What if he asks us? He has already proven his love for us.
