Do you MOOC?-Should you be MOOC-ing? The idea of free, Massively Open Online Courses, from some of the finest universities in the world, is fascinating and the potential appears to have nearly unlimited power(see the story below). The reality is 1) classes involve a large amount of self-teaching and 2) only the most self discipline tend to succeed. The week 1 statistics are tell tale. 14,343 students enrolled, 2822 hours spent in the course…On average they spent 11.8 minutes on the class last week? Seriously- what exactly can one read/discern/learn/share in 11.8 minutes? Certainly not college level material. Even accounting for self pacing-My guess is we would find this: 14,343 students registered, 4,343 students spent 0 minutes, 8500 students spent 8 minutes each (1133 hours), and 1500 students (top 10%) actually dug in and spent 67 minutes each (1689 hours). I could be mistaken, but this is my experience in general. If you are brilliant and incredibly self disciplined, the MOOCs potential is truly significant. Still for the vast majority of us simply supplementing a self read text book with a video taped lecture results in markedly poorer class material absorption than for those who are an active, in person, present, participant in a classroom scenario. Great story . huffingtonpost/2014/01/21/harvard-bible-edx-course_n_4612564.html?ir=College
