Do you believe in hell? Polybius, the ancient historian, - TopicsExpress

Do you believe in hell? Polybius, the ancient historian, said: Since the multitude is ever fickle, full of lawless desires, irrational passions and violence, there is no other way to keep them in order but by the fear and terror of the invisible world; on which account our ancestors seem to me to have acted judiciously, when they contrived to bring into the popular belief these notions of the gods, and of the infernal regions. As you can see from this quote, it was political and economic leaders who created these religious myths in order to keep people under their power. The ancient Roman leaders gave the people breads and circuses; carnivals, gladiator shows, and a host of underworld myths in order to keep the people ignorant and too busy to think for themselves. People create their own heaven and hell according to the way they think. Some may choose to make their lives a hell on earth, then spread that misery to those around them. Or, one may choose to live a joyous life thats guilt free and revel in the pleasures of the flesh. The choice is yours alone.
