Do you ever have trouble praying? Most folks Ive spoken with have all said they do. However prayer is essential to our faith. The scriptures are full of examples of prayer - the Psalms, Israels prayer book is filled with prayers of joy and majesty, anger and sadness, hope and wisdom, lamentation and uncertainty, and much more. Years ago I began carrying a wooden holding cross in my car. When traffic is horrible, Ive reached for that cross and found my frustration lessening - occasionally at stop lights Ill grasp it and be reminded to pray. Like a prayer cloth, a set of rosary beads, an icon or the labyrinth we had in our sanctuary during Lent, physical objects help us focus our thoughts and become attentive. Objects that become sacred for us can be as mysterious as the Mystery itself. During August, our sermon series is called All My Days: A Month of Prayer. Each week we will focus on an aspect of prayer and construct some physical ways of helping guide our prayers.
