Do you have a horse that suffers from Greasy Heel? Greasy Heel is Dermatophilus Congolensis. Left untreated it can kill a horse. Left untreated for too long and it can become infected by other bacteria which will require antibiotics. That means a vet bill!! Greasy Heel is a fungal infection similar but worse than Tinia or Athletes foot in humans. It can be transmitted to other horses via the stable bedding if the stable is not emptied and treated with a suitable fungicide. Horses with white feet/pasterns seem to be more prone to Greasy Heel. It is believed that this has to do with the photosynthesis reaction of white hair/pink skin. Same as sun burn on white noses. There have been reports of Greasy Heel symptoms on noses. Rain Scald also is of the same fungal bacteria so you can treat all in the same way. Treatments later. not long to go. Just like any fungal infection of the feet. Like Humans smelly feet. It can ,and most likely will be, under the toe nails. In the horses case, can cause a rot between the layers of the hoof between the outer hard wall of the hoof and the laminae. If you have your horse shod by some one else you likely will not hear about the bad hoof wall. Or that there is not much wall of hoof to hold a nail. Think about how long it takes for a hoof to grow 1 centimeter. Treatments. Lots of them that are economical if it is not to late to need antibiotics. Look in your supermarket for Zinc based creams. Sun screen, Nappy rash cream, etc always read the item for the highest volum of zinc per $. The Ladys Thrush treatment is good.If at the right price. Pink eye spray, which is for sheep and other eye infections is very good. Potties White ointment. If it is still around, is good. There was a product called Tedox available years ago that was very good and economical to use every day X2 I am trying to find another the same and close to it. Regardless Greasy Heel must be scraped back as much as possible before applying treatment. You may get a little blood but it is for the good of the horse. Did I miss any thing??? Ask or tell me.
