Do you own commercial property in SC? If so, you are probably overpaying your property taxes by 25%. If you (a) purchased a property in tax year 2011 or later; and (b) are subject to the 6% tax assessment, then you likely qualify for a 25% property tax exemption in South Carolina. According to those who work in the tax assessor’s offices, the vast majority of qualified commercial property owners fail to apply for and receive the exemption. You only have to apply for the exemption once and it will apply to future years. You must apply for the exemption before January 30 of the tax year for which the exemption will apply.
