The original purpose was to clear the body of impurities. 3. In modern times its mostly used as a weight loss aid to fit into your skinny jeans. 4. Centuries ago, the cleanse was a strict fast- today, juices are acceptable but the end result is the same. 5. Weight loss may occur during the cleanse, but its only temporary water weight. Youll likely gain it back. 6. Juice cleanse differ from source to source. They basically are the same though, allowing fresh, organic fruit to be squeezed and drank for a period up to 10 days. 7. According to a report from Vanderbilt University, liquid diets may lead to lean muscle loss, which slows the metabolism and makes weight loss difficult to maintain. 10. You may indeed weigh less at the end of your juice fast, but the water weight will come back as soon as you start eating regular amounts of carbohydrates. The muscle mass wont come back as easily, and the fact that you now have less of it means your body will burn fewer calories than it did before. A juice fast doesnt teach you how to eat to lose or maintain weight, so you are likely to go back to doing whatever it was that made you overweight in the first place. The difference is that your calorie requirements are fewer now because your metabolism has slowed, so not only will you gain more weight than you lost, youll have an even harder time losing it again. 11. During phase 2 of liver detoxification your body needs protein, so a juice cleanse will not be justified. So, what should you do? Instead, eliminate all junk food. Make sure you eat lean protein, plenty of fibrous veggies, drink lots of water and get 7-8 hours of sleep. This combination is far superior for detoxification than juicing.
