Do you want a $1.2 BILLION gas tax increase? Funding for Michigan roads looks like this: $271 million in our annual general fund for Michigan roads and bridges. a $40 million special increase by the legislature and the Governor for roads in February 2014. a $350 million increase on road and bridge maintenance occurs in the 2015 budget. If your asking yourself why these amounts seem a bit excessive, you would not be alone, nearly 61% of Michigan residents polled oppose a tax increase for road funding. Michigans has the 6th highest gas tax in the nation at 59.7 cents per gallon and yet ranks 43rd in road quality. But consider for example the state of Indiana which spends about the same as Michigan per mile yet boasts the best rural roads in the country. Contact your State Representative and tell them they have more than enough tax money coming in. They need to spend it correctly.
