Do you want a left turn lane on Olympic Drive for bicyclists? Fill out this survey now and choose Design 1. Fill this survey out right now. I know you are very busy and tired and ... and so are we all, but Ferry Bike- Commuters, Squeaky Wheels can only do so much to protect your direct interests without your direct involvement. Even with all the publicity and talk the bike commuters were under-represented at the July community meeting on Olympic Drive (the ferry offload) and now getting a dedicated left turn lane for cyclists is in peril. We need you to get involved and start by taking this simple survey, today, now ... It is being treated as a vote and from what I am hearing non-commuters are doing most of the voting! bainbridgewa.gov/614/Olympic-Drive-NM-Survey The short answer is we want Concept 1 (center left turn lane so we dont have to ride in the Suicide Peleton) plus a right-hand northbound bike lane for northbound riders and the future Sound To Olympics trail (if it gets built.) If you dont want to dig deeper just go on and answer as such. Otherwise go to the Squeaky Wheels website http:/squeakywheels.org and get more deeply informed. Background: The bicycle commuters were in the minority and under-represented at the public meeting in July for design alternatives for Olympic Drive (bicycle and pedestrian improvements to the ferry offload from the toll booths to Winslow Way) where currently up to 120 riders offload in a single wave 3/4 of whom turn left onto Winsow Way. Even though this project is largely focused on solving the current problem of the Suicide Peleton that rides on the yellow line or in the on-coming lane, the interests of that group were under-represented. The meeting was well attended but we did not show with enough people and non-commuters had a louder voice. Some of that louder voice was anti-bike and anti-bike-commuter and most of it was under-informed. While there is room for reasonable and informed people to disagree, being under-represented at a large meeting, even when the Board of Directors of Squeaky Wheels comes and expends all of our political capital, can leave you with a change that could make things worse not better for bikers. Your action, or inaction, will make a difference; it may be good or bad depending on each individuals level of commitment; and we will all have to live with the consequences up close and personal every day ... no action or inaction can spare the one or another of us. These are tough emotional issues. We are a highly dedicated, all political stripes, multi-user-type, multi-profession, all volunteer bicycle advocacy organization here to serve bicyclist interests, as well as looking out for the interests of other transportation modes but we need your help to help you. Please get involved and do it now, please. Ross Hathaway, President of the Board of Directors, Squeaky Wheels
