Do you want an awesome Pixaaar? What do you mean it’s not a Pixar? You don’t see quality like this anymore, I wish there could be more, I hope it never fades awaaaaay! Wow. Just wow. This film opens with a bang, 1st song reminds me of Les Miserables “look down” great beginning. Shows the strength of man in the harsh climate, we are stubborn, but that doesn’t stop us creating such magical art as this. The love story between Elsa and Hans is beautifully presented. In a matter of seconds the flirting and chemistry is conveyed perfectly. It is masterful, and better than anything I’ve ever seen, even after decades of love stories like Casablanca and Romeo and Juliet. The marriage is a little rushed, but hell it represents the crazy nature of the pair, and how they connect through that. I was already absolutely captivated and enthralled in the plot, which hadn’t really begun yet, within the first 15 minutes. The storytelling is magical, it comes right of the screen and grabs you along for the ride. The almost great Peterian Russian setting is perfect for the tone and location. The grand palaces, eastern accents (in some cases) and northern fauna like elk and pines also work so well and Parallel between two princesses and their split narrative in songs shows the personalities of each perfectly. It balances out absurdly well, and lets us into each character’s thoughts and feelings, and how they contrast to each other. There are Funny lines (“hang in there Joan”) (“did I say that out loud”) (“I bet they’re beautiful” cut to drooling slob) (“Youre gorgeous, wait what.”) (“you look beautifuller”) (“chocolate”) , Some strange lyrics (“who knew we owned a thousand salad plates”) (“or the chocolate fondant”) but they fit the quirky theme. The animation in the ice from Elsa is dynamic and fluid. The characters convey emotion well through facial expression, but it’s the un-natural elasticity of the glacial freeze that extends from those magical fingertips that takes the cake, and freezes it. The score is brilliant. The strings cue in at the perfect moment, and the chase music when Elsa is running from the ball is amazing. That few short seconds of composure is excellent, even for such a short piece. Elsa’s retreat from the ball, leaving the Fjord frozen gives the film a perfect obstacle. Its holds real weight, the character’s reactions accentuating the drama very well. It all becomes real, and Elsa’s desperate situation becomes that much more sad. You really sympathise with such a situation of isolation, and makes you think how you would react. Her escape from prison to “let it go” is empowering and again reminds me of ‘Do you hear the people sing’ with a little bit more of an upbeat tone. The Russian revolution is happening early, in this girl, and her deviation from societal parameters of normality fills you with energy. Its riveting and compelling. Life fills the movie and the song she sings (let it go). The vocals are strong too, throughout all the musical pieces. I loved every song in this film. All of them. They all rock (you know what I mean) in their own little way. Oh and Sven is awesome. Olaf is amazingly acted and his interactions with Christophe are great (“Im gonna tell him” etc.) (“Oh look at that, I’ve been impaled, eheh”) (“I’ll distract him while you run”). Nice little Bambi throwback on the ice stairs too. Finally... The scene between Anna and Christophe on the ice sea is awesome. The action is all there, and we get to see more Sven, which is great too. Anna’s fate is really sad, more so than you would expect from such an originally happy Disney film; and let’s just say ‘the great thaw’ is one of the most breath-taking moments in animated history. The intricacy is incredible. It makes me smile just thinking about all the thought that went into this film. [DON’T READ IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT] Also oh my god Hans you bastard! How sinister can you get? It came out of no-where, and the way that slimy ass acts throughout the rests just twists the blade. You remember what I said about deserved revenges in Inglorious Basterds? Throw Hans to all the bad guys from the Doctor Who Christmas specials. The twist spins the plot into a much darker tone. It gives it a hell of a lot more depth than the normal easy happy ending. To be fair, getting ‘decked’ in the face by Anna, is really satisfying to watch though. The ending is a little rushed, but which so much good, its easy to overlook, and it ties it all together superbly well. These are all random notes I stuck together whilst watching, and I had a lot to say. 9.25- Its magical, enthralling, visionary and deep. Frozen surprised me so much that I may like it most out of everything Ive seen this week. So, after all, its the Disney that snatches the victory even with Up and HTTYD just prior. This is THE animation masterpiece of our generation. Tangled was good, but this blew it out of the water, and I hope to god that this quality continues as long as Walt stays with us. Oh and shout out to Kamile Jakutonyte for suggesting this. Because if I dont mention it she might kill me...
