Doctor Who is almost unique in science fiction in that it can be reinterpreted in just about whatever way the production team of the moment wants without ever having to abandon its history. Its what allowed producers and doctors come to come and go while still allowing cry-worthy moments like the reunion of Sarah-Jane and the 10th Doctor or the 11th Doctor learning about the death of the brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart.
