Dodger is soooo smart! This is about two minutes after having a go at free-shaping. *Click* for investigating the mat (once hed brought it back because he bogged off to play with it as soon as I put it down... hes also really playful and funny!), squeezy cheese to pay the click... now most dogs, at this point on the first try at this exercise, will sit. Because they want more food so sit and look at me because they think that is the best way to get it (what has previously got them food) and dont really make the link with the click happening when they were investigating the mat until after a few goes... but not curious, clever Dodge. Straight back to the mat! *Click*, squeezy cheese, straight back again *click*! He totally got it! Then I lured him into a down on the mat for the first time ever (thats the first time Ive ever cued him to lie down in any way)... and a minute later he is doing down/stays on his mat with me taking a step or two away and staying put while I stand up, taking the food further away from him (most dogs will want to follow it) - big deal for an excited young dog with no previous training! He just got the concept of staying until released despite what I do and I was able to add duration and distance really quickly! What a clever lad! More distance, more duration and adding distractions next! The 3 Ds to proof the behaviour! As the owner of a very smart dog I know that it is not always a blessing... they learn undesired habits and behaviours that are rewarded as quickly as the ones you actually intended them to learn ;) ... but its teaching them stuff and theres no end to what you can do!
