Does the issue really lie on traffic itself or within us? According to Reverso online dictionary, traffic jam is a number of vehicles so obstructed that they can scarcely move. Traffic has been a very big issue in our society today. Many residents spend hours stuck in traffic. Many people have problems because of this. For example students cannot take the exam because they arrive late in school and workers gets penalty in their salary because theyre late for work or business professionals cannot attend their meetings because of heavy traffic. Problems like these need to be addressed immediately. Listed are several causes and effects of traffic as categorized by: (1) caused by the road managers; and; (2) caused by the road users. Let’s start with the ones brought about by the road managers: (1) poor route planning – the private and public vehicles are not evenly distributed on one road; (2) poor parking spaces – using the left or right lane of the road as a parking space causes congestion; (3) unnecessary road works – causes inefficient route planning; and; (4) lack of enforcement of traffic rules and regulations – this gives drivers and commuters the feeling that they are not bound by traffic rules. Next, we have the ones caused by the road users: (1) undisciplined drivers and commuters – this causes accidents; (2) lack of time management – this causes people to be late; (3) increasing number of population thus increasing car users – more car users result to congestion and discourage potential investors from bringing in more business in the Queen City of the South. Here are our proposed solutions for reducing traffic: • Better route planning • Proper parking spaces • Road works, if necessary, should be done at night. In that way, more work can be done in less time. • Traffic rules and regulations should be enforced as to make drivers and commuters feel that they are bound to rules and regulations • Time management reduces aggressiveness in commuters and drivers. • Imposing car coding or carless days With these cause and effects that have been mentioned, we can say that it is not only the system that has a role to play in managing traffic but also the road users. Although increasing capacity, as what road works would provide, only addresses the issue of congestion, which is short term. We also need to impose order as to address the behavioral factor of it because ‘Imposing order‘ actually means ‘imposing discipline‘ which have long term results.
