Dogwood Stable’s Campbell wins prestigious Joe Palmer Award By Dede Biles Aiken Standard online Posted: Saturday, September 13, 2014 12:45 a.m. Dogwood Stable President Cot Campbell, who already has received many honors, is being recognized once again. The Aiken resident and horseman is the latest winner of the Joe Palmer Award for long and meritorious service to Thoroughbred racing. Members of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters chose Campbell to receive the accolade in a vote. Also nominated for the prestigious award were Mike Gathagan, the vice president of communications for the Maryland Jockey Club, and Starlight Racing’s Jack Wolf, who founded the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. “I am extremely flattered to win this award, which has been given to some of my great heroes in the past,” Campbell said Friday afternoon. A member of The Jockey Club, Campbell was the Eclipse Award of Merit winner in 2012 and the Thoroughbred Club of America’s Honor Guest in 2004. In 1992, the University of Louisville’s Equine Industry Program gave Campbell the John W. Galbreath Award for outstanding entrepreneurship in the equine industry. In 2003, the University of Arizona’s Racetrack Industry Program recognized Campbell with the Clay Puett Award for outstanding contributions to the Sport of Kings. Campbell was a pioneer in the development of racing partnerships. The Dogwood ownership groups that he put together have campaigned such successful runners as Palace Malice, Summer Squall and Storm Song. An earner of more than $2.6 million, Palace Malice won the grade I Belmont Stakes in 2013 and the grade I Metropolitan Handicap this year. Dogwood retired the 4-year-old colt from racing earlier this month after the discovery of a bone bruise in his left hind leg. Summer Squall captured the grade I Preakness Stakes in 1990. His daughter, Storm Song, triumphed in the grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 1996. Storm Song also earned an Eclipse Award 1996’s champion 2-year-old filly. Another Dogwood horse, Inlander, won an Eclipse Award as 1987’s champion steeplechaser. The Turf Writers and Broadcasters will present the Joe Palmer Award to Campbell at the organization’s annual dinner on Oct. 29 at The Derby restaurant in Arcadia, California. The Breeders Cup World Championships will be held at nearby Santa Anita Park Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. “I look forward to going to California to receive this award, but I wish the joint mission was to also watch Palace Malice (in the Breeder’ Cup),” Campbell said. Campbell is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and the CSRA Business Hall of Fame. He was the Aiken Standard’s Person of the Year in 2013 and the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce’s Man of the Year in 2006.
