Dont let serving distract you from supping, sipping and sitting with Jesus.... .......eat of My bread and drink from My cup, says the Lord! In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus had an encounter with Mary and Martha, and God has used it to make an everlasting impact in my life. What He taught me has become the main ingredient in my seeking God for how He wants to lead me. This particular passage tells of Jesus entering a certain village and being welcomed by Martha, into her home. Martha had a sister, Mary, who was also there. Mary took advantage of this special visit by Jesus, by sitting at Jesus feet and hearing His word. On the contrast, scripture is careful to share that Martha was distracted or cumbered with much serving. Martha then approached Jesus with a complaint against Mary. Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me. And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her. The Lord began ishowing how religion has painted and presented a bad picture to the church. This picture is very similar to the one depicted in this story of Martha and Mary. Many people, in the church, are busy and cumbered with going, doing and serving. We are involved in ministry on top of ministry. We rip and run from can to cant. We burn the midnight oil, and the candle, on both ends and even in the middle. We have more meetings than corporate organizations and more rehearsals than the symphony. And at the end of the day, were frustrated and beat down, and we dont know whether were coming or going, and were broken down and really no good for anybody. And the Lord began sharing that a large portion of what we, in the church, are going through, can be directly attributed to what Martha believed and was caught up in. She was too busy. She was doing too much. She had serving on her mind. Serving was what she thought God desired first and foremost, therefore she did it and did it well and with a spirit of excellence. However, she forgot the most important thing: Stopping by the well, and getting a drink of spiritual water from Jesus! Guess what Jesus really desired first and foremost! Dont guess, lets read it. Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things (serving). But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her. Q. Whats that one thing? A. Sitting at the feet of Jesus. Spending time with Jesus and spending time in His word. Q. What do you think happens as a result of spending this quality time with Jesus? A. He gives YOU instructions and directions for what He wants to do in your life.
