Dont miss this weeks Friday seminar, which should be relevant and interesting to everyone. Dr. Richard Naylor, a bedbug specialist, will talk about the return of the evil little creature that makes sleeping less pleasant than it should be. After leaving academia, Richard now runs his own company (CimexStore, Chepstow, UK) where he cultures and sells live insects for research, runs trap and insecticide product trials, and serves as consultant/expert witness in law suits related to bedbug infestations. Time and Place: Friday 17th of October, 13:00, Blue Hall TITLE: Ecology and Dispersal of the Bedbug Abstract: Once thought to be consigned to the history books, bedbugs were a pest of a bygone era. And yet, despite our best efforts, at the start of the 21st Century, this tenacious little insect made a comeback, reemerging as one of our most detested urban pests. The speed of the resurgence has left the scientific community racing to fill large gaps in our understanding of bedbug biology, ecology and behaviour. But how do you study the ecology of a species so intimately associated with humans? Few people are willing to allow their infestation to develop and disperse for the purposes of research! By developing large arenas with artificial hosts and realistic hiding places, we can start to unravel many aspects of bedbug ecology and behaviour that were previously impossible to study in natural infestations. With our improved understanding, we can design better products and strategies for controlling bedbugs. I hope to see many of you there! Martin, on behalf of the organizing committee
