Dont read the comments, cuz theyre just plain ignorant and just as divisive as the arguments many claim to support regarding the music industrys polarity. Instead, understand that it is, indeed, an industry and while Max Martins 20+ year career of chart toppers certainly deserves its accolades, the comment (whether or not Martin actually believes it to be true) that he makes fun and inspiring music really only matters when it comes to a) the person making it AND b) the market for which it is intended. Music is a product. Yes, it is an art form, and as an art snob myself I have great difficulty accepting that some people will BUY music made this way; and as much as I would love to fault artists (like Katy Perry and 98 degrees and Britney Spears and so on and so on) for releasing these albums, the purpose of an industry is to serve its public. I hate that, but I get; and these personas have every right to make as much money as they want by providing their fans with whatever their fans will buy. At least--in most regards--the songs he makes ARE catchy and fun and accomplish what they set to do. The fact that making music like this is more about science and analysis than it is about musical talent, however, is what SHOULD boggle your mind. Chart toppers are not about good music; chart toppers are about understanding market trends, tracking the ebb and flow of the demographic, and the human connection with tonality and preference for their mathematical order. this is TRUE and it is the reason why popular music (as well as classical music) comes to us in one of a few common chord progressions. Even deviating from these norms follows patterns--after all, ALL music consists of the same limited vocabulary of some combination of the 12 semi-tones. thats IT! The musical language consists of 12 semi-tones (letters) to form the words (chords) ordered into phrases (sentences) that categorize the dialect(s) of sound known as jazz or pop or rock (or, more importantly, the modes of Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixo, Aeolian, Locrian). thats really all music is. 12 semi-tones manipulated by 7 modes. all of the scales fall somewhere within this language, with the accidentals making up the nuances that separate Spanish from Portuguese and Mandarin from Cantonese. So, to have a career of #1 hits for more than 20 years means: heres a guy who--whether by education or inherently--somehow understands these very simple truths and has afforded himself a mastery of manufacturing these truths into a very real industry. As much as I hate it, it is honest and it is true and it is beautiful. and i hate it.
