Has VV inspired enough confidence to lead Pirates next season? Apr 24 2014 11:22AM logo MMASEKEPE MATSEBANE It is a known fact that troops need confidence when they are about to enter warfare, but that cannot be said about Orlando Pirates as they look forward to the next season. When Irvin Khoza chose Vladimir Vermezovic to be the Buccaneers Valentine, the message was clear, VV was joining to save their current disastrous season and make the team ready for the next. While Patience is a forever preached in football, but Pirates fans should be worried when they think of that word and what has happened since the Belgrade born mentor assumed the reigns in Parktown. In VVs first 13 matches, Pirates have already lost six, and this is half what David Moyes lost with Manchester United, but it is bad. Roger De Sa only lost three in 11 league matches, drawing two and winning six, but was fired. Pirates only won five, with the other two ending in draws, but there are more striking statistics. In all the matches that the former Kaizer Chiefs coach has been in charge, Pirates never scored more than two goals in a match, in fact, that feat was only managed once when they beat relegation favourites Free State Stars 2-0. In 10 matches that Pirates were involved in with VV in charge, fans were treated to just one goal per game. With top strikers like Kermit Erasmus, Lennox Bacela, Collins Mbesuma, though already written off as too big, Helder Pelembe, Thamsanqa Gabuza, Pirates have been firing blanks. This has even led to Pirates flirting with Mame Niang from SuperSport United and Chris Katongo from bottom side Golden Arrows to join the sinking Bucs ship. The picture gets even more grim. In his last season in charge of Chiefs, the 50 year old lost just five matches, one less than what he has achieved so far, but during that time, he had coached Chiefs in 23 league matches. While not many people are watching, and with Pirates not expected to win anything this season, unless they get past Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup semifinals, Vermezovic is fast becoming the PSLs very own David Moyes. Pirates next have Platinum Stars on Saturday and given their not so convincing record against Dikwena, Moyes might just have to start practicing his post-match that lately incorporate long explanations on fatigue and lack of luck. The picture might be gloomy, but the one concerned is the one who last sees it and it might be the same in VVs case as he still has belief going in to the next clash. “We need to win this match (against Stars) and have the confidence to go to the next game ready to fight again. Sometimes it is not so easy but we will have to finish well, “said Vermezovic. Pirates are currently fifth on the league table with 40 points from 26 matches and at the moment, not many can say Vermezovic has inspired Pirates confidence to be a force next season...
