“Double Takes” dance performance – Going back Sat night 7pm Jamestown Art Center. How to resist detachment as the NSA amasses the biggest archive the world has ever known? “Double Takes” is a new evolution in Lance Gries’s “The Fifty Project” - an assembled archive of 50 duets he did with 50 dancers at a SoHo studio when he turned 50. Recently shown as a video installation at La MaMa, “The Fifty Project” is an archive as homage to the dance community that formed him. “Double Takes” complicates this by having 4 mid-life dancers improvise with one another for 50 minutes, against the massive backdrop of the video archive of their own archived performances with Lance. Sometimes they are spying on themselves on the screen - copying their own or other dancer’s gestures - sometimes oblivious, but inevitably the archived past impacts the live improv in ways still being sorted out. Timely and compelling video installation performance in a former boat warehouse in Jamestown for a two-night experiment.
