Doug Bell, from Blue Iguana Recovery Programme shared these photos with us. Iona Popescu and Mark Eichelmann from Island Veterinary Services on Grand Cayman, helped release 15 head started Cyclura lewisi this past Sunday. Island Veterinary helps with any medical issues for the Programme. These youngsters are two years old and are being released into the Salina Reserve. Doug says, The wooden boxes are retreats that we have designed for specific sized/aged iguanas. We have found that if we just let the iguanas go in to the wild they disperse to the four winds but if they can spend their first night in a safe place like the retreats then they will spend more time looking around their new environment and stand a much better chance of staying within the reserve if not in the area where they are released. They have 25 more to release over the next few weeks into the Colliers Reserve. Doug- Once we have completed this years release, we will have put just a fraction under 1,000 Blues back into the wild. Amazing work!!! This beautiful species came almost as close as you can to winking out of existence.....
