Douglas Fairbanks was one of the most popular and successful actors of the silent era and one of the founders of the Academy. He was born Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman but after his father abandoned the family his mother changed his last name to that of her first husband. It just took Fairbanks a few years after moving to Los Angeles to meet Mary Pickford (who he would later marry) and become a huge hit on the screen. He was born on this day in 1883.
