Down with oppressors! Zafar Mehdi: So, here we are. Muharram 8 tomorrow. 23 long years. Ban. Clampdown. Ruthlessness. Resistance. Kashmir. Karbala. Husainiyat. Yazeediyat. A piece I wrote on this day last year. Nothing changed in last one year, like nothing changed in last 23 years. Tomorrow we will again see people being thrashed, manhandled, cane charged and arrested for the crime of taking out a peaceful azadari procession in the heart of Srinagar. Again, i would reiterate, these processions do not pose law and order problem for anyone. These commemorations just help the campaigners of justice and truth reorganise their life around the principles exemplified by Husain in Karbala. Whoever bans it is an oppressor, and its our duty to stand up against oppression, as Husain did in Karbala.
