Dr Doyin Okupe, the President Jonathan’s spokesman, referred to Islam as ‘mother of Boko Haram.’ He said this on a programme, straightalk aired by TVC News last Monday (8th April, 2013). According to him “the religion of Islam gave birth to Boko Haram and Boko Haram is working according to the tenet of Islam. One thing is certain; Boko Haram will never be able to Islamise Nigeria and cannot convert President Jonathan from Christianity to Islam.” In his reaction, the National President of Jama’atu Ta’awunil Muslimeen, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan said “a learned person is known not by the degree of his education but by the way he handles a sensitive matter like religion. What Doyin Okupe said was out of ignorance or his hatred against Islam. No Muslim will attribute operation of MEND to Christianity because its act is not in accordance with the teaching of Christianity. If Okupe is now attributing Boko Haram to Islam despite all Muslims’ clarifications on the obvious matter, it shows he really hates Islam which is not good for his caliber and position he is holding in the country.” Sheikh Dood further stated that Muslims in this country should condemn this blasphemous statement intellectually and demand for his apology. If Muslims are the ones that made mention of such, counter reactions would have occurred from every corner of the country. That is, Muslims’ freedom of speech is restricted in this country” he said.
