Dr. Leonard Stovall a World War I veteran, was a highly respected African American physician whose office was on 12th Street east of Central Ave.from 1925 through the 1950s. He was renown for his skill and far-sighted innovation. In the late 1930s he established The Outdoor Life and Health Association at 1430 south Central. This was a tuberculosis sanitarium which admitted all races and was the only such facility to treat African Americans. At one point in the 1950s, it housed 50 patients, 28 of which were white. After its first fifteen years, it is reported to have arrested 500 cases of tuberculosis. The was located in the San Fernando Valley with a view of the Sierra Madre mountains. African Americans on the Eastside with tuberculosis received their treatment there. The organization was reportedly the only non-profit, non-sectarian interracial organization in the United States run by African Americans.
