Dr. Susan Pineda Mercado of the WHO, a friend of mine, has been posting her “Compassion in Crisis” updates on how to help. If you can respond, write to Susy at [email protected]. Here are ways to help: Lactating moms who can spare some milk can send to Philippine General Hospital and other Human Milk Banks. 1000 syringes (1 cc), immediately needed. Can someone donate this? Villamor updates. They need disposable diapers and sanitary napkins. Toothbrushes, soap and toiletries. Perhaps someone can think of a way to make cash available to these families. They have nothing. They need some money for transportation and to figure out how to move on if they have no relatives in Manila. (Posted 9 p.m. Nov. 15) We need to be prepared to relieve [medical] volunteers as this progresses. Suggest coordination with Dr Rorie Quijano, the correct number is 0917 552 5429 Hundreds of survivors flying in thru Villamor Airbase and no programme in place to meet them. Some volunteers are now providing immediate care to families. They are transporting the injured to hospitals, treating lacerations, helping families find relatives, comforting the grieving. They urgently need tetanus shots for the wounded. Children are dehydrated, they need oresol. Hot coffee, a soup kitchen might help. Just listening to their stories might help. We now need to 5,000 jerry cans - these are blue plastic jugs with covers (20 liter). Please let me know if this is something that can be supplied at one or two points: Manila and/or Cebu. I can give you exact locations of foreign medical teams that are running their generators on limited fuel, specs of the generators, types of fuel needed. Through Philip Tangcos and the DLSU network in the Visayas, perhaps volunteers can provide immediate care to people who are lining up to leave in Tacloban city, Ormoc, Calbayog and Catbalogan --- or arriving in Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao City. See if people are lining up at bus lines, seaports. Tetanus shots for the wounded. Oresol for dehydrated children. Hot coffee, hot soup. Help one family find a relative. About to start Day 6 at WHO with a stakeholder mapping for a two year national psycho-social support programme. If you would like to be involved in this two-year effort my email is [email protected].
