Draco gasped for air. It had come out of nowhere, some sort of spell, it had knocked him back and now he couldn’t breathe. The signs of battle still raged around him as though there weren’t a boy on the ground, silently choking to death. This was how he was going to die; the great Draco Malfoy, dead from asphyxiation. Black spots popped in his eyes, obscuring his vision until he was pulled under altogether. He was brought back to life with an aching chest and a feeling of hideous claustrophobia. It took a moment to reconcile the image of the hulking figure that loomed over him, saving his life, with the pretty brunette girl he’d barely noticed in his house that his eyes adjusted to. She had torn her Slytherin colours off and was currently wearing a Gryffindor tie around her head, whether it was a show of support or simply to stop the bleeding from the cut on her temple, Draco will never know. Draco didn’t know how but he was able to breathe, she must have done something to save him, though there wasn’t a wand in her hand or anywhere in sight. “CPR” she said easily “congratulations idiot you were just saved through the means of the people, you undeservedly despise, to revive their patients. Muggles. You’d better not make me regret it” she growled standing up and leaping over him to pry a wand from a fallen Death Eater’s hand only to direct it towards another Death Eater, toppling him effortlessly. She had saved his life; of course it stands to reason she was on the side of the angels. She ran past him once more tapping her wand to his chest, relieving the pain there instantly before dashing off to deflect a curse aimed at Longbottom. She was too young to be here, she should have shuffled off with the other Slytherins. Well maybe not all the other Slytherins, just a swift glance told Draco that that wasn’t entirely true. He could see a Natalie and Danielle fighting back to back against and onslaught of spiders, Chase had lost his wand and was simply punching Death Eaters in the face and, if Draco squinted, he could spot Blaise in the Owlery, picking off anybody who endangered the defenders of Hogwarts. Draco could see, even at a distance, that his friend’s face was pale but determined. He tore his eyes away from Blaise in order to gaze after the girl who had saved him, desperately trying to remember her name. It wasn’t until Draco had pushed himself to his feet and lost her in the crowd that he realised why he knew her but not her name. She wasn’t in his year, her sister was. Greengrass. Astoria. That was her name. It hit him like a ton of bricks. Or that might have been the actual ton of bricks that fell from the castle when a giant deemed it acceptable to sideswipe the third floor. In the crushing darkness, Draco was losing hope that he’d ever be saved again when Astoria’s livid face appeared in the gaps in the stone. “Really?” she asked frustratedly, shifting the bricks frantically from his body. He couldn’t hold back a hysterical smile as he was dug out. Draco didn’t know it but from that moment forward Astoria had his back. After all she couldn’t give up on someone she’d put so much effort into saving. Twice for the love of Merlin! Astoria was no quitter. - Cristie
