Dragon Oak Temple dragonoaktemple@msn A knight is expected to be gentle and faithful to his lady, fearless in battle and tournament, courteous and merciful to a defeated enemy and honorable in everything. At the beginning all men were equals, but when envy and covetousness grew, when forces triumphed over right, it became necessary to appoint defenders for the weak against the strong. They were called knights. The strongest, ablest and best were selected for this purpose. A knight must be merciful, kindhearted, liberal, just and fearless. Shame must be harder for him to bear than death. He is a defender of the Holy Church. The arms a knight carries are designed for special purposes. As the shield covers the knight, he must protect the church and royals from robbers and infidels. As the hauberk guards the knights body, he must safe guard the church and king. The helmet shields the knights head, as he shields the church from all who attempt to injure her. As the lance head drives back the unarmed, the fear of the knight must prevent all evil doers from approaching the church and king. The double-edge sword, the most honorable weapon, is used to kill by stabbing and to strike right and left. Its edges signify that the knight is the servant of God and the people. The swords point is the symbol of obedience. All people must obey the knight. The horse which carries the knight signifies the people. The necessities for an honorable life. As the knight guides his horse, he must lead the people. He must defend the clergy, the widows, orphans, the tithes and aims. The knight must possess two hearts, one soft as wax the other hard as a diamond. Inexorable towards the wicked, the knight must be merciful towards those claiming pity and compassion. Such are some of the obligations of a knight. A knight which fails to fulfill them disgraces himself in this world and loses his place in Heaven. Knighthood is not about appearance, but action, not about shields, but strength, not about glory, but grace, not about fame, but faith. It is not about dressing up to re-enact past glories. It is about being yourself. Knighthood as a quest is to find yourself, to find your soul and its connection to your faith. It is about being glorious every day. Knighthood is about self-mastery, and if you can master yourself, you can master your world. The world could use more Knights. James
