Checkout #FruitvaleStation drewonfilm Pacific Rim – In Theaters Now Guillermo del Toro’s extravagant mecha / monster battle royale, Pacific Rim, hardly requires an endorsement from me to pack fan boys into the seats, but nevertheless, I am pumped to see some colossal fight scenes. Del Toro has the unique ability to transfer his visual concept onto the screen, melding the dreamscape of his mind with the cinematic experience. After the lackluster summer box office moviegoers have endured thus far, Pacific Rim’s promise of some spectacular Kaiju mayhem is a sight for sore eyes. Fruitvale Station – In Theaters Now (Limited) Based on an unsettling true story, Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station has garnered numerous accolades for its touching portrayal of a malicious occurrence. The film follows 22-year old Oscar Grant during New Year’s Eve 2008 as he navigates his course around friends, family, and one nefarious law enforcement officer. I have been a fan of Michael B. Jordan after his work in tv’s Friday Night Lights and the 2012 film Chronicle, and anticipate his turn as Oscar. Jordan is joined by Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer who has a powerful role as Grant’s mother. This film, and the disturbing event that it is based on, deserves all the attention it receives. Oldboy (2003) – Netflix Instant Oldboy, the twisted 2003 Korean film from Park Chan-wook, remains one of the most unnerving, horrifying displays of macabre violence I have ever watched, and it is an incredible film. Now that the redband trailer for the Spike Lee remake has premiered, fans of the original, and the curious few that haven’t yet taken the plunge, now have an excuse to rewatch this mesmerizing tale of revenge. The American remake, featuring Josh Brolin as the ill-fated lead, has the potential to impress, but the original film which captured such a morbid vibe, cannot be trumped as a pristine example of haunting cinema.
