Driftwood can serve a number of functions in an aquarium. While most people think of it as a decoration, it also can provide a food source and encourage ideal water parameters for certain fish. Its important to understand these ancillary purposes of driftwood when deciding if its right for your tank. Rocks and wood provide a great deal of surface area for the nitrifying bacteria to colonize on. These bacteria help to eradicate ammonia and nitrites from your aquarium – important since both of these substances are toxic to fish.
