Driving on our highways, will reveal the hazard drivers encounter in performing their professional duties. Just yesterday, as I was driving from Lagos to Asaba, just between Ijebu-Ode and Ore, I looked ahead and saw stranded passengers of a mini-bus. I parked to find out what there problem was. The driver explained that the engine of the vehicle knocked and the passengers were demanding for refund of their fare, which was not readily available, because the cash transaction was completed in their office, while only a few sums of money was give to the driver. Besides, there was no arrangement to send another bus for the stranded passengers. The driver had to give each passenger the little he could afford. I offered to pick only four passengers to Benin, but when I discovered that the money refunded to them could not carry them to their destinations, because the complained that there were travelling to Port Harcourt and Bayelsa. I therefore decided to extend my offer to Asaba. This incident happened in a tick forest, where no help is readily available and armed robbers can even strike. The driver had to stay by the vehicle, after making contacts with his office, expecting attention. He has to remain there alone, until the vehicle is removed for repairs. The main point is that drivers suffer a lot of hazards on the roads, though some of them are really reckless and wicked. Even truck drivers battle with the trucks whenever they are ascending the hill. I commend all drivers and appeal to FRSC and the police to be kind with them and also educate them on how to observe traffic laws, rather than being antagonistic.
