Drop, Cover and Hold On by Jaime Edwards-Acton Last Thursday at 10:16 a.m., the staff at St. Stephen’s and the students of the preschool participated in the Great California Shakeout. We all got to practice our “Drop, Cover and Hold On” drills so that we are as prepared as we can be if an earthquake does hit. It was great seeing the entire staff work as a team - each one playing a unique, vital role of some kind to ensure the community’s well-being. I couldn’t help but draw parallels to our faith community at St. Stephen’s – rehearsing our own readiness drills on Sunday mornings, on Thursday evenings, at Cursillo weekends, at the Young Youth Lock-Ins and Old Youth Día de los Muertos celebrations. We don’t necessarily drop, cover and hold on, but we do kneel to pray, cover empty plates with delicious food and hold on to each other at the Peace, during coffee hour, in the house groups and in the ups and downs of life, in general. We’re getting ready. Everyone playing a wonderfully unique and vital role. Looking after one another’s well-being. Were getting ready for God to show up … around us … between us … within us. We’re getting ready for the ground beneath our feet to shift. Ready for our understandings to be challenged. Ready for newness to surprise. And when it hits, whether it’s a small tremor or something life-changing, perhaps we’ll be able to move through it feeling a little more confident that, when the shaking, noise and dust settles, we’ll be okay.
