James Aphex Twin has made one hell of a comeback, after quite the long hiatus finally giving us the first studio record in about thirteen years. The man responsible for arguably single handedly changing the face of electronic and ambient music in the 90s presents his newest release, “Syro” as a near completely, sonically sound and gorgeously structured masterpiece of audio electronica. The opening track “Minipops 67[120.2]” gives us the comfortable and beautifully layered design as Aphex Twin has standardly delivered. Balancing harmony with an arsenal of synth gadgets on his side, Syro is a real treat for that one standalone electronic journey fans have been yearning for years. “Produk 29[101]” delivers a hardline drum and bass feel into a spacey journey and through a well blended verse of synthesizer utopia. “180db_[130]” gives a rave like tone set to James standard complex design, somehow coordinating so infectiously with distortion. Its hard not to be impressed and happily grinning that James has not lost much of his touch, nor his admire for these large amount of years not appearing in the limelight of electronic mainstream via the Aphex Twin alias. Theres almost a serenity to “XMAS_EVET[120]” which greets the listener through mellow tones and chimes giving an essence of peacefulness. James does not seem to stay in his own mold, reinventing his genre crossing and fusing together sounds some musicians would not risk releasing as serious material. Many of Syros tracks hypnotize the listener within keeping that Aphex Twin groove. So many layers throughout Syro mesmerize almost into a trance, feeling as if James has created a soundtrack for the android kind. This has been worth the wait all along that Aphex Twin fans so patiently sat on the sidelines and anticipated for. What else could possibly be said about Aphex Twin that hasnt already? This is a must pick up for 2014. You can comb through the vast majority of electronic acts or in which ever youd like to consider the genre, but Aphex Twin will hold steady ground as laying the groundwork for acts to blossom into future years. https://youtube/watch?v=RUAJ8KLGqis
