Drowning at Navajo Lake On Saturday, August 16, just after 5:30 pm, San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to “Cocaine Cove” at Navajo Lake in reference to a drowning. An investigation revealed the family of 6-year-old Christian Korte, of Durango, Colo., was camping at the lake for his birthday; he turned six the day prior. Christian had been playing with his older brother, away from the water; however the boys got separated. The family began searching and soon found Christian floating in the lake. They performed CPR until park rangers arrived to relieve them. Lifesaving efforts were continued for quite a while, but were eventually deemed hopeless. “This is heartbreaking,” said Sheriff Christesen. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Christian’s family”.
