Drug deal: Appeal Court sets up fresh panel for Kashamu By Tunde Opeseitan/Lagos Appeal Court President, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, has set up a new panel to hear the extradition suit hanging on a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu, over alleged illicit drug deal. Kashamu, a notable figure in Ogun politics, was said to be wanted for alleged importation of prohibited narcotic into the United States of America (USA) between 1993 and 1995. A former panel of the Appeal Court had voided a perpetual injunction made by Justice Okechukwu Okeke (now retired) of the Federal High Court in Lagos restraining the Federal Government from extraditing Kashamu to the United States to face trial in connection with the drug deal. However, Kashamu had contended that the judgment of the former panel of the appellate court was made without jurisdiction because he had earlier sponsored a petition against members of the panel in another matter. Meanwhile, the new panel, which comprised of Justices Isa Akeju (presiding), Adu Aboki and Ibrahim Shata, on Monday, reserved ruling on the matter. Justice Akeju adjourned the suit after oral submissions by counsel to Kashamu and that of the Federal Government. Lawyer to the Federal Government, Emeka Ngige (SAN) had urged the court to dismiss the application describing it as mischievous and abuse of court process.
