Dt 3:12 And this land, which we possessed at that time, from - TopicsExpress

Dt 3:12 And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites. 13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants. 14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day. 15 And I gave Gilead unto Machir. 16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon; 17 The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward. 18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war. 19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you; 20 Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you. K so i am attaching the same map i used a while back again for this study because i dont live there & have no clue about the places this section is talking about. Aroer = “ruins” according to the other map that i attached before, is jus a little ways south east of Dibon along that same river that it is on which you can see on this map. And the southern line south of Dibon marking the border of the territory is covering the river Arnon as that was the southern border on the east side of the Jordan river. So that southern area along with half of the mountains of Gilead = “rocky region - ummm mountains of the rocky region? I guess that is like mount Hor (mountain) or atm machine... In any case that section was for Reuben & Gad & everything on the east side of the Jordan & north of the half way point of Gilead was to go to the half tribe of Manasseh including the land of Bashan which was known as the land of the giants & Argob that as we learned last time included 60 walled cities. So according to that other map that i showed before this one the river Jabbok runs through Giliad @ close to the mid way point & turns south on the east side of it so east of that is the land of Ammon. K so the bible dictionary said that Geshuri was the land of the people of Geshur = “proud beholder” that was a district of Syria on the north end & coasts here just means border so it may not be close to water. & Maachathite = “pressure (literally she has pressed)” is another group that they did not dispossess most likely on their north side. So according to Num 34:23 Hanniel was in charge of Manasseh so i am guessing that he is to inherit the land of their on the west of the Jordan whereas Jair = “he enlightens” is most likely in charge of the majority of the east side as he renamed the zone he got after himself to Bashanhavothjair = fruitful villages of Jair. We have the line unto this day but earlier on we learned that this section is taking place during the 40th year of the exodus in the 11th month (Dt 1:3) so not too long has past as they started their east of the Jordan conquest during the 38th year as we learned earlier in Dt 2:14. So the bible dictionary says that there are 2 guys with the name Machir = “sold” but the 2nd one lived in Davids time so here it must be in reference to a son of Manasseh who had a son named Gilead (Num 26:29) & who took possession of Gilead by dispossessing the Amorites therein back in Num 32:39. So the question is did he named his land after his son or was it already called that & him having a son named Gilead was just a coincidence? And then there is the line I gave him the land of Gilead in the 15th verse of todays section makes me wonder if the perspective of the speaker switched from Moses to God for that line as YHVH is the one giving them their land & also it didnt make much sense when he said I gave him the land that he himself took - so either Moses was saying that he gave Machir permission to take it, or that God gave Machir the strength & ability to take it; but it is hard to read it at face value when he was given something he took. Maybe this is an issue of culture clash preventing me from getting the picture in the way it was intended but as it turns out God gave them all of the promised land but not on a silver platter, as they had to shed blood or chase people away to take it for themselves as this section is not the one i live my life by in 2 Chr 20 when angels did all the work & the enemy killed themselves & the Israelites only had to walk over there & take what they wanted from among a pile of corpses & not lay a hand on them themselves. Not that God has me stripping dead bodies for my groceries; but i live by a passage in the story that goes 2 Chr 20:15b the battle is not yours, but God’s. - seeing as how no matter what issue i face if i want it handled then all i have to do is go where God tells me to go (Jn 3:8) speak (or do) what He tells me to when i get there (Num 22:38) & watch Him work as all my issues gets resolved through no effort on my part. So i am guessing that there is some flatland east of the river Jordan, west of the rocky region of Gilead coming south from the sea of Chinnereth = “harps” or Galilee & that flatland along with the area south of gilead was divided up between Reuben & Gad. Ashdothpishgah is either the springs of Pisgah or the slopes of Pisgah depending on which interpreter you like as i learnd that sometimes a scribe will disagree with the word that is in the text & put a note in the margian about what they think it should be seeing as how the original texts had no vowels & they were added in if someone was copying a text without the benefit of someone else who knows how it goes errors could be made as the example was in Dt 19:6 “blood” is coded as 1818 8676 5315. The translators followed the kethiv reading that has Strong’s number 1818, which means “blood”, but the qere reading is Strong’s number 5315, which means “life” (The written variation is called a kethiv and the marginal note is called the qere). And looking at Dt 19:6 i see how either word could be used & the meaning of the verse remain unchanged but i dont know how a word in the 1800s can look so close to a word in the 5300s that there would be any confusion... So i looked em up & the word for blood has 2 letters & the word for life has 3 letters that include the word for blood in the same order & seeing as how they read their language right to left; the 3rd letter is different & not the 1st the way i look at it. Then in the 18th verse is a reminder of the command that just because Reuben Gad & half of Manasseh have their land in their possession already doesnt mean they can kick back while their brothers go get their land & that they need to help. So seeing as how in Num 32 when we 1st seen the story about Reuben & Gad going to ask to inherit their land early, that because the land was good for cattle is why they wanted it may be why we have this line about I know you have much cattle reassuring them that Moses & God are compassionate to their conerns. And the section ends off with the bit about after they are done helping aquire the rest of the promised land for their brethern they can go back to their wives & animals on this side of the Jordan. So because this whole section is still recap i dont know if we learned anything this time, except that some scribes would add a note in the margin of the bibles they were copying called a qere if they thought that there was a possible error. Well we also seen a small piture of Gods compassion as the bit about I know you have much cattle so park them here & let your families take care of them while you take care of business is seen & so maybe this is pointing to the issue that God can have a plan (like dividing the land after all of it was taken) & part way into the plan He can choose to alter it & or make some special concessions for us because He wants to demonstrate His love & compassion & we in turn will love Him more when He listens to us & we see that He took our words into consideration & better yet allows us to have what we want - just remember that God is not always about giving you what you want, as He is not our errand boy fetching whatever we say like a dog (His prime directive here on earth is to get a relationship with us as i said before; so the 1st thing He gives us is whatever it takes to encourage that relationship to be formed & developed & the 2nd thing He gives is is anything else we need & our wants are last on the list if they do not contradict, impeede or distract you from #1 or #2). Also when talking about getting what we want from God i might as well mention that when you are converted this verse is supposed to be fulfilled in your life - Ezek 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: 20 That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. - so between that one & this one - 2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; - so when we are a new creature with a new heart that is reconciled to God then we will want what God wants for us in the first place so we will get what we want a lot more often then when we are asking from a place of the old heart like according to this verse - Jas 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. And i shared the secret to how i live my life without much stress by living it by Jn 3:8 & Num 22:38 so that 2 Chr 20:15 gets fulfilled in my life. So next time we will continue on with the charge given to Joshua & until then let us pray that we are blessed with the new heart from Ezek 11:19 so when we ask we will receive because we are asking according to the will of God.
