Due to the introduction to a few olympic and power lifters in the gym we have had an increasing concern over the fact that the weights are being dropped as shown in this video. I thought Id take this opertunity to explain why these lifters need to drop the weights as a pose to people who drop weights unnecessarily....... the main reason is safety as it can be dangerous for the lifter to return the wait back to the starting position as it puts excessive strain on the joints. A second point is that their sports are weight restricted and therefore they will sometimes need to avoid the slow lowering (concentric) phase of the exercise as this will increase muscle mass which is not thier objective. We should however be using bumper plates for such lifts and also try to restrict such lifts to the quieter times in the gym and be aware of other lifters around you.
